 House prices fall for February

House prices fell by 1.5% in February, this was the first decline since June 2009 following seven consecutive monthly increases, Halifax has reported.

 UK house prices doubled during the 2000s

The noughties was a significant period for the UK housing market. Despite a fall of more than one-fifth between mid 2007 and mid 2009, house prices increased by more in real (i.e. inflation adjusted) terms than in any other decade over the last 50 years.

 Affordability for first time buyers improves significantly

During 2009, the average price paid by an first time buyer was affordable for someone on average earnings in nearly four in ten (39%) of local authority districts, according to this year’s Halifax First-Time Buyer Annual Review.

House prices rose for the fifth consecutive month during November, Halifax has found, with the average house price up by 4.2% (£6,803) in the first eleven months of 2009.

 One in three benefit from stamp duty changes

New research from Halifax shows that up to 112,000 homebuyers in England and Wales – 31% of all buyers – have been exempt from paying the tax as a result over the ten months between September 2008 and June 2009.
