energywatch fears more price pain for consumers

energywatch has repeated its call for action from the energy industry, Government and consumers to take the sting out of the pain of energy price rises. The call comes as Centrica warns of further price increases in 2006.

Consumers already face a double whammy in January when Npower and Scottish and Southern Energy price increases take effect. energywatch believes that warnings from British Gas’ owners Centrica indicates that even more pain awaits Britain’s energy consumers.

Allan Asher, Chief Executive of energywatch, said: “It seems clear that energy companies are planning new price rises for 2006. If that is true then it is vital that suppliers also develop more measures to protect their low income and vulnerable customers from the damage that further price hikes will cause. Some companies have developed price freezes, trust funds and social tariffs for these consumers. We need all suppliers to do more to help those in most need.

But suppliers cannot do everything. Government has already announced increased winter fuel payments for Britain?s pensioners to safeguard them from the full impact of these rises. However, many hard pressed consumers, such as those with disabilities or families with young children, do not have this safety net and we need to find ways to help these people who are also vulnerable if living in inadequately heated homes.

Finally, consumers should act now to sensibly and safely reduce their energy consumption in order to keep their bills in check. For all sorts of reasons saving energy has never been more important and it is the surest way for consumers to stop their bills spiralling even higher.”

Help and advice is available for consumers from energywatch and our team of expert advisers on 08459 060708.

Consumers who are struggling to manage their fuel bills should contact the newly established Home Heat Helpline 0800 33 66 99, which has been set up by suppliers and offers free practical help and advice on a range of services.
